Specific Rulings on Gold and Silver Zakat
Gold and silver hold a unique status in Islamic Fiqh as standard measures of value. Unlike general household items, personal clothes, or personal vehicles—which are completely exempt from Zakat—gold and silver are inherently subject to Zakat whether held as investment bullion, savings coins, or personal jewelry.
1. The Nisab Thresholds for Gold and Silver
The established Islamic standards for precious metals defined during the era of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) remain universally binding:
- Gold Nisab: 7.5 Tolas = 87.48 Grams = 20 Miskhal = 2.8125 Troy Ounces.
- Silver Nisab: 52.5 Tolas = 612.36 Grams = 200 Dirhams = 19.6875 Troy Ounces.
If an individual owns gold or silver that equals or exceeds these respective weight limits, Zakat of 2.5% on the prevailing market value becomes mandatory once the lunar year condition (Hawl) is met.
2. Ruling on Personal Gold Jewelry Worn by Women
There exists a well-known scholarly discussion among Islamic jurists regarding women's personal, everyday gold jewelry:
- Hanafi School of Thought: Zakat is mandatory on ALL gold and silver items, including personal jewelry regularly worn by women, provided total weight reaches Nisab.
- Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali Schools: Personal gold jewelry worn for ordinary, non-extravagant decoration is exempt from Zakat, provided it is not acquired as an investment or hoard.
To exercise spiritual caution (Ihtiyat), many scholars recommend paying Zakat on all personal gold jewelry to ensure complete fulfillment of divine duties.
3. Mixed Purity and Carats (24K, 22K, 21K, 18K)
When calculating Zakat on gold jewelry made of alloys below 24K purity, you must determine the net weight of pure gold contained within the item or calculate its current market trade value. For instance, 22K gold contains 91.6% pure gold, while 18K gold contains 75% pure gold.
