Detailed Rules for Calculating Zakat

Calculating Zakat accurately requires a comprehensive understanding of what assets are included and what liabilities can be legally deducted according to Islamic jurisprudence. Zakat is evaluated on net asset balances owned on the specific calculation date once the annual Hawl cycle is completed.

1. Valuation of Cash Assets and Accounts

All liquid money held in foreign currencies, bank deposits, savings accounts, electronic wallets, or cash kept at home must be calculated at face value. If you hold foreign currencies, convert them to your local base currency using prevailing exchange rates on the date of calculation.

2. Business Inventory and Trade Goods

Business owners, wholesalers, and retailers must evaluate merchandise intended for sale at current wholesale market value on the day of calculation, rather than purchase or retail price. Equipment, factory machinery, store fixtures, delivery vehicles, and office real estate used strictly for business operations are exempt from Zakat.

3. Treatment of Debts and Liabilities

Islamic law allows for deducting valid liabilities from gross assets before determining whether wealth reaches Nisab. Short-term personal debts, immediate supplier invoices due, unpaid household expenses, and due installments for the current month can be subtracted. Long-term debts (such as multi-year housing loans) are generally restricted to the immediate 12-month payable portion according to major scholarly consensus.
